A Story of Faith

A Mission of Love

On October 21, 2003, the Sisters of Charity of the Immaculate Conception begin a year-long celebration of 150 years of faithful service for, with , and among God's people. With grateful hearts the congregation will initiate various celebrations in Saint John, Digby, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Vancouver, and Peru.

Our mission as Sisters of Charity I.C. and Associates is to share in the ongoing mission of Jesus, revealed in the Gospels, in the mission of the Church, and in our own particular history, tradition, and signs of the times.

Deeply concerned with preserving the faith of the children orphaned by the cholera epidemic in Saint John, New Brunswick, Bishop Louis Connolly pleaded with the Sisters of Charity of New York for help.

In response to this great need, Honoria Conway and three women came to Saint John in September of 1854 to begin a new religious community. This was to be the first English-speaking congregation founded in Canada. Honoria Conway was a woman of deep faith and courage imbued with the charism of charity. Her sensitive and attentive response to the needs of the poor was but a reflection of her strong sense of mission and service.

We share her vision of service with the people of God with a particular spirit of simplicity, generosity, and attentiveness to the needs of the times.
