News from the Pacific Region

On October 21, 2003, the Sisters and Associates of the Pacific region marked the opening of our 150th anniversary year with a prayer service in the chapel of St. Vincent's Hospital.  We gathered with friends and collaborators for an inspiring evening of Scripture, prayer, reflection, ritual, and song.  Music was provided by harpist Llewellynne Adam and soloist Charles Morris.  the chapel was beautifully decorated with flowers provided by our Associates and Friends.  Our framed 150th anniversary logo was displayed on an artistically draped crimson cloth representing the flame of our logo and Chapter 2002 theme.

Each of the Sisters received a commemorative cross and chain with SCIC inscribed on the front and on the back, 1854 - 2004.

We were reminded that this is the third time our community has celebrated the 50-year Jubilee proclaimed in Leviticus 25: 8-10.  'You shall set the 50th year apart.'  As part of the ritual, we were asked to consider what we might need to ask God, in order to be inwardly ready for the journey into the future and, as a sign of our readiness, we were invited to welcome and receive the light from the Pascal candle.

After the prayer, we gathered in the cafeteria for socializing and enjoying refreshments brought by the Associates.

September 8, 2003

The Sisters of Charity and Associates gathered at St. Vincent's Hospital on Monday, September 8, 2003 for the first of many 150th Anniversary events. The presider for our Eucharistic celebration was Father John McCarthy S.J. Liturgical music was led by Llewellynne Adam, harpist, and Charles Morris, soloist. Before the final blessing of the Mass, a ritual took place at which time the logo and theme for the 150th Anniversary was unveiled. The theme "A Story of Faith - A Mission of Love" was explained and a prayer offered. This occasion was a time to thank all for coming together to celebrate God's constant, confirming love all along our journey. It was noted that Anniversaries are milestones that call for notice, because they provide a welcome chance to say thanks first to God, then to all our benefactors.

Following the Mass, the entire assembly shared a Chinese meal in the cafeteria and enjoyed each other's company. The evening concluded with the showing of a video depicting some of our congregation's history and the history of the SCIC's in Vancouver. From all reports, the evening was a huge success and we look forward to the next event in our year long celebration.
