 Sister Muriel
Buckley
I'm a native of Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. I entered the Sisters
of Charity of the Immaculate Conception forty-three years ago. My desire
at that time was to become a Sister and to help others.
During the formation years our group of beginners cemented our friendship, and
the relationship we enjoyed from our teenage years.
We accompanied one another in our growth in the spiritual life. After
professional studies, I taught in a primary school in Saint John
for four years. I thoroughly enjoyed the spontaneity of the children.
In 1967 I volunteered for the Peruvian missions. Luckily I was
chosen, and in 1968 I joined others of our congregation in this
'foreign land'.
I have lived through many ups and downs, and felt the love of the
Creator in my being. I adjusted to a foreign language and culture
that allowed me to appreciate my own history and womanhood. It
was here in Peru that I really understood our charism as Sisters
of Charity,
understood the charism of charity of St. Vincent de Paul. The poverty,
simplicity, and love that existed among these poor people opened
and touched my heart; I have been evangelized by them. I realize
that this evangelizing action is "a two-way street".
My life has had its dark and sunny days, however, the presence of
Jesus and the strength of the great women who have gone before me,
touching my life ... these have made my road easier. I am happy!
It is life-giving living among the mountain people here in the Peruvian
Andes.
To be free to accompany people, to know Jesus, to help people to
accept themselves and to realize their own worth and dignity as
well as their power, this is a challenging and rewarding invitation
in
today's church. The challenge is ours to respond to the risks knowing
that Jesus is the strength making the living out of this commitment
possible.
Do you hear a call to follow Jesus in this way? ... a call to live
this charism of charity? Blessings and prayers for your life journey.
